Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative
The Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative (HCMI) is a methodology and tool which enables hotels to measure and report on carbon emissions in a consistent way, since hotel companies´approaches to the measurements before were too different, carbon measurement metrics varied widely which could lead to confusion particularly among corporate clients. It was developed in 2012 by the International Tourism Partnership and the World Travel & Tourism Council in partnership with other stakeholders. HCMI can be used by any hotel anywhere in the world, from small guesthouses to 5 star resorts. Currently, over 24,000 hotels globally are using HCMI. The mechanism contributes to inclusive and sustainable economic growth, increase of awareness, transparency monitoring and resource efficiency.
