Busy Bees in Luxembourg City Youth Hostel

 In solutions

Hostelling International is a global association of Youth Hostels. We are a charity and our focus has always been on social empowerment. For the 2017 Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development we have developed a busy program to address ten different areas of sustainability.

In October, we focus on the theme of “Protecting Destinations: Culture and biodiversity”, read more on our blog. A fantastic example of this is the Beekeeping project in Luxembourg City Youth Hostel.

Due to the (well-documented) decline of bees and their essential environmental function, the Luxembourg City Youth Hostel decided in 2013 to collaborate with a local beekeeper and lend its roof to three colonies of bees.

They wanted to support the local biodiversity and raise awareness of both the vital importance and harmlessness of bees. Like all animals, bees form an essential part of our ecosystem and play an underestimated role in plant diversity and pollination. The honey received in turn is used in the in-house restaurant as well as sold to guests in jars, which helps to maintain the project and break even.

Above all, they have been overwhelmed with the positive feedback. The first batch of honey sold out within days, much of which went to curious neighbours who were excited to buy something locally produced. As the project has also appeared in various newspapers, it certainly managed to raise awareness and perhaps even encouraged others to take up beekeeping themselves.
