the Art, Culture and Tourism Centres of Lanzarote
This case study shows the sustainable development of Lanzarote through the singular vision of the artist César Manrique, where art and nature coexist in perfect harmony. Conscious of the unique originality of the island landscape, the artist promoted an ambitious creative project of intervention in the territory, whose main axis is the preservation and conservation of the environment and culture. He began to develop a network of tourist centers in the island while collaborating with other stakeholders for support, for instance the main stakeholder, among many others, is Cabildo de Lanzarote – the Government of the island. As a result of the project, the tourism in Lanzarote increased – the island received almost 3 million tourists in a year, scuba diving centers have increased their busyness in 30% and other improvements. Each employee has received an average of 68 training hours per year, education in schools was promoted. 90% of staff has been trained on sustainability, garbage amount was reduced to almost 30% compared with the amount of a year before. The project also contributed to the protection of endemic species and almost 3% of the budget is allocated to heritage conservation.
