The Ras Al Khaimah Waste Management Agency (RAK WMA) has developed a program in partnership with RAK Tourism Development Authority (RAK TDA) to get all hotels of the Emirate (30 hotels) to source-separate their generated waste into 4 streams: food waste, mixed recyclables, glass and hazardous waste. In 1-year time, from development of the project to this date, 500 tons of recyclables (paper, cardboard, plastics) have been diverted from the landfill and re-introduced in the recycling industry. Besides this, 300 tons of glass have been diverted from the landfill and re-introduced to the local industry. Thanks to this initiative, hotels have grown in a sustainable manner and significantly reduced their waste, safety measures were increased for the staff which is managing the waste, environmental contamination was avoided.
