Green Supply Chains
The project started in 2015 in the city of Ljubljana, Slovenia, in preparation for assuming the title of European Green Capital 2016. By 2017 the project has spread to the whole Central Slovenia region, linking Ljubljana and 25 other municipalities. A study among Ljubljana hoteliers and restaurants showed that the main obstacles in purchasing locally produced goods were price and complexity. The Green Supply Chains project tries to solve these problems by offering hotels and restaurants in Central Slovenia region the possibility to purchase 100 % locally produced foods and drinks via a uniquely managed, centralized and simple-to-use on-line system. Farmers, hotels and restaurants who want to participate in the project sign a formal contract with the cooperative obliging to either deliver or purchase locally produced goods. Members easily submit their daily/weekly orders and goods are delivered to their doorsteps. The aim of the project was to increase the percentage of locally produced food and drinks in the hotels and restaurants in Ljubljana and its surroundings. By achieving its main objective, the project is contributing to key areas of inclusive and sustainable economic growth, social inclusiveness, employment and poverty reduction and resource efficiency, environmental protection and climate change, expressed by International Year of Tourism for Development 2017. Today, 11 Ljubljana farms are included in the project, along with 17 farms from the Central Slovenia region. 5 restaurants and 3 hotels have so far signed the contact and bought food via platform, purchasing in total 13 tons of local produce, additionally 4 hotels and 2 restaurants are in the process of joining the project.
