Hostelling International Sustainability Fund
Hostelling International (HI) is a charitable global association of Youth Hostels. The Hostelling International Sustainability Fund (HISF) is a competition that funds projects designed to reduce CO2 emissions in HI’s global network of hostels. The HISF was launched in April 2012, with the idea that the HI traveller can donate a small amount of money per overnight stay booked through our booking platform www.hihostels.com to finance the winning projects, as well as to contribute to offset their stay.
Since the first edition of the competition, it has granted 13 great projects with a total of £135,651.42, saving 1,525.0205+ tonnes of CO2 per year of activity of the granted projects. This year, we will be awarding a total of £19,799.57 to the winning projects, to be chosen from the 4 projects running in this year’s competition. We ask our guests, members and the public to help us select the 2017 winning project by voting for their favourite project/s. The voting period opened on the 6th October 2017 and closes on 20th of December 2017. The public vote makes up 1/3 of the decision-making power, implemented through a voting survey. The other 2/3 is made up of an international jury and our National Association’s Sustainability Coordinators.
At the same time, a portion of the money collected through online donations goes to three great social projects in China, Peru and Malawi, managed by our partner myclimate. The three projects that HI decided to contribute to are related to food security and social protection. These efficient cooking, stove diffusion and biomass energy conservation programmes are contributing to improve the health of locals, protect forests, reduce CO2 emissions, create jobs and more. They are designed to fit the local needs of communities impacted.
