OneDollarGlasses at HI Bolivia
Hostelling International is a global association of Youth Hostels. We are a charity and our focus has always been on social empowerment. For the 2017 Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development we have developed a busy program to address ten! different areas of sustainability.
In July we spoke about giving back and building bridges within our communities. Hostelling International is committed to supporting the communities around our hostels.
OneDollarGlasses (Lentes al instante) is a social project, carried out by Hostelling International Bolivia and ISSEM, with the support of several institutions and young volunteers who give up their time to help out poor people in Bolivia.
OneDollarGlasses is a solution for the more than 150 million people worldwide who need glasses but cannot afford them, over 250,000 of whom live in Bolivia. They consist of a lightweight, flexible spring steel frame and prefab lenses and can be locally manufactured in Bolivia with simple bending machines. During eye-test campaigns, the generous HI-Bolivia volunteers staying at the different HI Hostels help those in need of assistance.
