Voluntourism in Sri Lanka

 In Solutions

Voluntourism can contribute to implement the Sustainable Development Goals if the tourism entrepreneur is willing to link his business to support local community-based projects which will reflect the targets listed in the Agenda 2030 and if there is a sufficient flow of tourists who are willing to volunteer and contribute personally to help deserving people succeed in local sustainable projects.

We are building in Weligama, Matara District, Sri Lanka, a new urban ecolodge of 25 rooms (to be completed by end of 2017) in a toxin-free garden and orchard, that would be structured as most functional and convenient to provide safe accommodation and more ecofriendly facilities to the voluntourists that should eventually be engaged in the selected projects in this area, mostly to protect biodiversity and empower gender equality, by a reliable and like-minded international tour operator or other. At this time we are ready to start immediately to plan and organize promotional activities aiming at increasing awareness about the IY2017 through dialogue and educational materials on Sustainable Development Goals in view to anticipate and discuss with all stakeholders the benefits of voluntourism for the community and the area we live in the Southern Province.
